Careers And Work Experience

Careers Services.

Our Careers adviser is Mrs. Abbey Wadey. She can be contacted by email at awadey@sphcs.co.uk

Mrs Wadey is available Monday- Friday by appointment, offering informed and impartial advice and guidance to all students year 7-11 to help with their future pathways for when they leave St Philip Howard Catholic School.

For years 12/13 our sixth form careers coordinator is Mrs. Claire Skaptason. For further information please visit our sixth form page https://www.sphsixthform.co.uk Mrs. Skaptason is located in the sixth form center and can be contacted on 01243 558218 or by email cskaptason@sphcs.co.uk.

Our careers office has high quality resources available to all students. A range of our resources include Unifrog, sixth form and colleges prospectuses, young money matters, Next steps activity booklets, career games and quizzes, access to labour market research and much more!

We provide 1:1 appointments to our year 11 students with our Career Adviser to discuss their future plans and how we can support them in achieving this.

Unifrog, the one-stop-shop to helping students discover their future. All students have access to Unifrog and will use this throughout year 7-11 and again through sixth form at SPH.

Students and staff access Unifrog, students will record their skills, achievements, activities and competencies. Unifrog encourages and helps students to build a CV, browse future pathways from the fantastic careers library and resources available to plan their future careers.

At the end of our student’s time here at SPH they would have created a “suitcase” of their time and achievements to prepare them for their future pathways.

Throughout the school year there is a number of career focused lessons and events for all students across all year groups, for further details please see our school careers year planner. These events and focused career sessions incorporate visits from employers, apprenticeship providers, colleges, universities and many other organizations. Students are actively involved in a wide variety of activities, lessons and workshops focusing on their possible future pathways.

We are proud to continue to offer our students the opportunity to complete a week work experience at a placement of their choice subject to policy guidelines. Work experience is available to our year 10 students (due to Covid19 this will unlikely go ahead this academic year but we will aim to provide at a later date in year 11 when it is safe to do so). Work experience is an insight to the working environment and can prepare students for the world of work. We have created a large network of local employers that can offer work experience. We have an enterprise partner in Butlins of Bognor Regis since 2018. Also we have built a partnership with Tristram plants since 2019.

We work closely with the careers enterprise company to ensure that St Philip Howard Catholic School is meeting Gatsby Benchmarks, which set out the standards of career guidance in schools. We review our progress against these standards every term using compass/compass plus.

Our schools objective is to ensure a programme of Personal Development is available for every year group and the aim is to inspire students and to provide them with employability and lifelong learning skills to complement their qualifications along with the confidence and independence to continue with their individual journeys.

Evaluation of the Careers Programme and Data

We feel it is important that we evaluate our Careers Programme on an annual basis. It is important that we measure the impact of our strategy through student, staff, employer, and parent feedback. We access this information several ways by obtaining verbal and written feedback accessing the result. The results and responses then inform how we reflect on and enhance the Careers Programme for future use. We track and analyse the destination data of our students Post 16 and Post 18 by information received from our students, Post 16/18 providers and our local County Council Destination Data. We continue to work with and use The Careers and Enterprise Company's Compass Plus tool on a termly basis to self-assess our strategy against the Gatsby Benchmarks. These results are then shared with our Enterprise Coordinator to inform progress travelled and how we can continuously strengthen our Careers Programme.
Our KS3/KS4 Careers Leader is a member of the CDI (Careers Development Institute) the professional body for the careers sector, and regularly evaluates our Careers Programme against the CDI framework, to support the planning, delivery and evaluation of careers, employability and enterprise education for children and young people.
