Information for the new Year 7 intake 2017-18The DfE now requires that all schools record the nationality, ethnic background, first language and country of birth for all students.
First language is the language your child heard as a baby. It will be a language that they still have contact with at home or in the community even if they usually speak English at home.
Schools have also been asked to provide levels of proficiency in English for students developing English as an additional language (EAL). The data will be collected yearly and will be a way of assessing any future steps needed to aid EAL students in the classroom.
