Reading Hub

"What´s important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them.. the most important thing is that people read" – Neil Gaiman, author

What is certain is that, wherever you go, no other school will have a Reading Hub like the one at St Philip Howard Catholic High School. All sorts of reasons for this – partly because it´s a library in disguise and partly because the students want to be there out of lesson time! We know this latter point because the number of students in the Reading Hub is over 100 every morning break and over 150 every lunch break.

It´s a library in disguise, because the Hub is all about reading for pleasure. Yes, students from all years have English lessons in there: not only English literature, but also grammar, creative writing, poetry and information skills. Small tutorial groups use the Reading Hub too from year 8 mathematics to A–level politics. But.. the main focus is on reading and the Hub contains all the fiction and poetry books for lending.

All the non-fiction books have been moved into the school departments, so that whichever department you look at on this website, each has its own library. No student is far from a library book here, mainly because the books are stored on classroom shelves for the teachers to help your children with their lessons. We are one of the first schools in Britain to adopt this approach, but probably won´t be the last.

Behind the scenes, the Reading Hub does all the things you would expect from a school library, such as book award schemes, literacy initiatives, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), etc. We also do a whole lot more, as you would expect from a school that goes the extra mile for its students – we build electronic lesson support materials for the student intranet, we organised the Arun Literary Festival in 2015/16 for 7 local schools and provide extra–curricular activities every day of the week.
