"The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple." – S Gudder

At St Philip Howard we believe that Mathematics teaching must be student centred, using activities that cater for the different learning styles. We encourage students to have high expectations within the subject and expect them to participate in the learning experience. It is important that we give the students the concepts and strategies to enable them to access the work but also that we inform them of the necessary action to make further progress. We encourage an appreciation of the subject, help them to experience the excitement of finally solving a problem and enable them to understand the relevance of mathematics.

We enter the Mathematics, individual and team , challenges to extend those who are gifted and talented in Mathematics. As well as offering intervention for those who need extra help

In key stage 3 we follow the National Curriculum schemes of work and build on the concepts taught in key stage 2. We encourage independent and enquiring thinkers through a range of activities concentrating on investigative tasks involving group work.

We constantly assess students progress throughout lessons and there are 3 formal assessments at the end of each term.

In Key stage 4 we follow the Edexcel GCSE Linear Course. Their final assessment is at the end of Year 11 and consists of two papers : a non calculator and a calculator paper.

At Key stage 5 we follow the Edexcel modular course. At AS level we study Core 1, Core 2 and Statistics 1. At A2 level we study Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1. We offer Edexcel Further mathematics.

For those students who require it, for university entrance, we offer support and entrance for the Step Examinations.
